Show Notes Episode 25: How to write a love song and not really mean it

Can you perform with just a notion of technique and without a sense of sincerity?

Working with purity: either just passion or just technique… as a comparative structure to inquire into the question.

Is it better to have feeling or a technical sense of the work? We can find examples of great performances of both.

Sometimes as we learn more effective techniques in creation, we might get more of a reaction but we can feel more about the technique than the content.

Authorial intent: can we know the intention? Do we need to?

The audience’s reception: that’s the counterpart to intent of the author.

And then the idea of expression.

And communication.

What is the difference between expression and communication?

Expression is the individual’s taking from the internal to the external and feeling as if they have expressed. Though not necessarily feeling as if they have conveyed.

Expression doesn’t account for whether the audience gets in the zone of understanding the thing expressed. It is simply the individual’s feeling that something internal was brought from the inside out. Without a detailed regard for someone else’s comprehension.

On the other hand, communication has that extra piece as well as another.

Communication can also be saying without expression. You can communicate an idea that does not have an internally sincere existence for you. Something as simple as conveying information, for instance.

There is a category of informational relaying: here is the time, or what this information is. I know this without feeling.

Is there an invisible something that renders a creative work better because the creator sincerely expressed something?

Uniqueness is standing out without study; originality is distinct but requires study in order to see it.
